DURHAM UNIVERSITY MLAC DISSERTATION

My final-year module is The F-Word: My work focuses on French philosophy from Descartes and the Enlightenment philosophes to the present, with a specific emphasis on contemporary political and social thought and its application to the problems of 21st-century politics: To provide project-management experience of planning, documenting, and writing an extended piece of work in English 8, words. My research interests are focused on the history of Russian linguistics, particularly that of the late Imperial and early Soviet period. Your proposal can be based on a specific film director, actor or genre, but also on specific themes or theoretical approaches. The module is available in two forms: The process of dissertation allocation begins in the third term of your year abroad, when students submit two word proposals, outlining two distinct topics on which they would like to work.

Since staff absence will be a principal cause of non-allocation, you should align each proposal to the research specialism of a different supervisor. I have further interests in francophone Caribbean writing, the histories of words and ideas, and translation and transcultural studies. This module is compulsory for students starting a year abroad in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. By focusing specifically on questions of relevant intercultural interest, students will develop as international citizens so that they can make a positive contribution to an increasingly globalized society. Current projects include lovesickness and courtly culture; Caravaggio and visual agency; Arcadian taste and the European Grand Tour; and the nineteenth-century debate on sacred art in Europe, with a particular attention to the intellectual exchanges between Rome and the British Empire. My final-year module is Epic and Chronicle:

As students are expected to spend AT LEAST seven months in the host culture if studying a single language, or AT LEAST four months in each host culture if studying two languages, it is expected that they will engage with the TLRP as soon as they arrive, and that they will work towards initial consultation with their supervisor within one month of arrival.

I am currently developing my research interests in modernity and visual culture in a new context, connecting them to the emerging field of the energy humanities, with a specific focus on theoretical and cultural approaches to oil and its relation to cultural memory.
