I have an additional specialism in literature and religion, particularly literary and filmic representations of Islamism from the Middle East and North Africa. Their role will be to guide and nurture your research ideas by recommending areas in which you should target your reading. My second research area is cinema: I specialise in modern Middle Eastern literatures, film and cultures with a particular interest in the relationship between health, illness and disability. Writing the dissertation will provide experience in planning, documenting and writing a relatively extensive piece of work 5, words in the target language or 8, words in English ; it will also increase your facility for expressing yourself at a suitable academic level and in presenting and referencing academic writing. You should alert your supervisor at an early stage to any circumstances that affect your ability to meet the formative and summative assessment requirements. Students will be informed of their allocation in early July, at which point they should contact their allocated supervisor to discuss provisional reading.
Skills will be developed specifically through an extended enquiry-led activity that will provide students with the competences to succeed in the world of work and the ability to manage their own intellectual and professional development. If you fail a core language module, you will not be permitted to continue study of that language in your second year. I speak Spanish, German and French and am happy to supervise across languages. I work on early Spanish literature and art, and am able to supervise a range of literary topics, as well as art historical projects that focus on European production more broadly. The specific topic of each TLRP will be agreed with the supervisor, and students will follow an agreed programme of reading whilst supplementing their work by displaying evidence of independent research skills and initiative. The module aims to offer students an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of an aspect or aspects of their studies by researching and writing a research project in the target language in an area in which the School can offer specialized supervision. Students dlssertation receive written feedback by the second week of the Michaelmas Term, and key aspects of good practice applicable to the dissertation will be disesrtation with the relevant dissertation supervisor.

I also have a strong interest in the relation of French philosophy to anthropology and science particularly debates over the relationship between biology, evolution, culture and technology.

I am very happy for students to take forward ideas related to the subjects, texts, and critical approaches covered in my teaching at levels I and II, or for students to develop ideas related specifically to the content of my specialist final-year module. The module is available in two forms: I would be happy to supervise topics on any aspect of nineteenth-century French literature, as well as some dudham of twentieth-century French literature especially the nouveau romanon which I have taught a final-year module.
Students will thus be working closely with an expert in the field.

My final-year module not available in is French Cinema: I would be happy to supervise a range of topics that relate to dissertarion areas. I am also interested in the period of European modernism, and more specifically in the notions of subjectivity and fragmentation, which I have researched extensively in the works of Samuel Beckett and Carlo Emilio Gadda. My final-year module is Contemporary French Writers: I’m also interested in modern and contemporary Arabic literature, film, TV, music, visual art, dissedtation.
However, the dissertation is a challenging enterprise, involving independent learning, a genuine commitment to research, and the ability to organise and manage your project and to dissertatlon fluently and accurately in English or in the univegsity language. I specialise on issues of gender and sexuality, and especially on the depiction of men, masculinities, sex and sexualities on the screen.

You should assume, however, that for your dissertation you will need to expand beyond the primary and secondary source base covered in these modules.
I have taught and published on both of these strands and I will be happy to supervise up to two dissertations per year on topics related to the history of language theories, as well as Slavonic historical, contact or socioliguistics.
Teaching will primarily take the form of group presentations, consisting of short student presentations on topics including formulating a research proposal, methodology, and finding evidence.
